Cancer Fighting Foods

Picture
Whole Grains
Whole grains include germ, bran and endosperm. They are very rich in fiber and low in fat. Since whole grains have a high content of fiber, you eat less. Whole grains such as whole oats, brown and wild rice, millet, barley, quinoa & buckwheat all contain components that can help break down cancer cells.

Fish
Fish that are rich in omega 3 fatty acids such as mackerel, trout, herring, tuna, salmon, sardines and anchovies may lower you risk of cancer. Wild caught fish is the best. Try to stay away from farm raised fish as the fish may contain cancer-causing polychlorinated biphenyl which may raise the risk of cancer. (http://www.healthcastle.com/farmed-salmon-cancer.shtml) .

Legumes
Legumes which are various dried beans have anti-cancer benefits. Beans are very rich in fiber and have very little fat and no cholesterol. Some types of legumes include lentils, kidney beans, lima beans, garbanzo beans, mung beans, black beans, black-eye peas, split peas and red beans. According to the American Institute of cancer research, the active ingredients in beans that scientists believe may play a role in cancer prevention include: saponins, protease inhibitors and phytic acid. These compounds, called phytochemicals, are found naturally in plants and appear to protect our cells from damage that can lead to cancer.

Vegetables
Dark leafy green vegetables which are high in vitamin k contain cancer fighting components such as fiber, folate, carotenoids, and flavonoids. Spinach, kale, collards, turnip greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens and beet greens are all high in vitamin k and a great source of fiber. Cruciferous vegetables such as brussel sprouts, radishes, cabbage, cress, bok coy, broccoli and cauliflower are high in vitamin A & C and also good sources of fiber, iron and calcium.

Fruits
Berries, which are the highest amongst all fruits in antioxidants, are considered “super foods”. They have photochemicals in which fight cancer. Raspberries which contain ellagic acid are one of the top cancer fighting fruits. Blueberries and strawberries and cranberries are also good sources of antioxidants and vitamin C. Fruits should always be eaten at least 30 minutes before or after a meal allowing the body to absorb all its vitamins and nutrients.
